Bereavement Follow-Up Often, when we have suffered the loss of a loved one, there are many friends and family on hand to provide support. But as normal life resumes and people get back to the tasks of living the person who is grieving may begin to feel isolated and alone. This may not happen right away – in fact, it may not happen at all – but when and if feelings of overwhelming grief reoccur, Nanaimo Hospice can help. When Hospice has provided support prior to the death of a loved one, bereavement follow-up is provided for the spouse or primary caregiver for one year following the loss. A brief telephone call is made to connect with the surviving spouse/caregiver to ensure that no further support is required. If, during that period of time, the person dealing with loss feels they need further support, they can be referred for counseling or to one of the many programs and services Nanaimo Hospice has to offer including counselling, group support, the self-care clinic, the Hospice library, Healing Stitches, or the walking group. It’s our way of staying connected in a way that is friendly and non-intrusive.
