CREATIVE COUNSELLING FOR CHILDREN

The greatest gift you can give your children
is not protection from change, loss, pain or stress,
but the confidence and tools to cope and grow with all that life has to offer them.
~~Wendy Harpham, 1998~~

Give Your Child the Help and Support Needed to Cope with Death and Grief

Picture
Children grieve differently at different ages and stages of their life.  Finding the right support for a grieving child is important.  It’s also important to remember that children are capable of grieving well. When adults let children see them grieving, it gives the child permission to experience a natural life process with less fear.   Allowing children to express their feelings at this time helps in the healing process.

Hospice offers programs to support children and families as they face death and grief.

Grief Support for Children

Our Creative Counselling Room, located at Hospice House, is designed specifically to meet the needs of children ages 12 and under.

In a child friendly environment filled with materials that encourage a child to express themselves and with the support of a trained Counsellor, children explore and find ways to deal with grief.

How does a Creative Counselling Session Help Children with Grief

The Counsellor acts as a supportive witness and guide as the children acquire the tools they need to live with the death of someone special.
The Importance of Play and Expressive Activities

Play is the natural and primary way for children to express themselves. Expressive activities and play offer an outlet for them to express the emotions of grief. Hospice programs for children are built on this premise.
