The Nanaimo Bhaktapur Hospice Palliative Care Twinning Project
Partners in Compassion is about Caregivers supporting Caregivers. It started when a group of caregivers already working in the field of hospice palliative care saw a need in Nepal. It didn't take long before we found our twinning partner - The Bhaktapur Cancer Centre's new palliative care unit.
We decided to start small and keep it small because we didn't want to take away from funding already going to local hospice programs. And we wanted to inspire other hospice societies and programs across Canada to do the same and it didn't take long before Health Canada agreed to partner with us to develop "Canada's Guide to Hospice Palliative Care Twinning Projects"
Today, the members of the hospice palliative care team in our community are committed to the supporting their counterparts in Bhaktapur - and in some cases, they have inspired others to give as a way of supporting the travel costs associated with site visits to Bhaktapur that have occurred each year since inception. During these visits, nurses and doctors from Nanaimo join with the staff in Bhaktapur to learn and grow together - often at their own expense. It's their way of giving to the program.
