Volunteer Training for Client Care Volunteers
Hospice has developed a powerful program, based on provincial standards, that prepares volunteers for being with individuals and their families through an end of life journey and during times of caregiving and bereavement.
Upon completion of training, volunteer opportunities may include 1:1 support for individuals and families in their own homes or in hospital on the palliative care unit; facilitation of support groups; working in the Self Care Clinic; providing support for the Saturday Walking Group, and much more.
Hospice offers a minimum of one training program annually. The training is 40 hours in length over a 6 week period and includes further orientation to the palliative care unit at Nanaimo Hospital.
Topics covered include:
During the training you will be guided in the development of your skills through interactive and experiential exercises. Once the training is completed, a post training interview will take place to determine suitability for specific programs. Volunteers will be mentored for three months by an experienced volunteer following training. All volunteers are expected to participate in continuing education to keep their skills current - these education sessions are offered through Hospice House.
