Volunteers
– The Heart of You can volunteer for Hospice by:
Veteran Hospice volunteers have a wide range of life experiences and skills that enable them to offer practical assistance and supportive care to meet the special needs arising out of the physical, emotional, spiritual, social and economic stresses which are experienced during the final stages of living and during bereavement. They are well trained in listening and “being there.” They must undergo an RCMP security check and sign a confidentiality agreement with Nanaimo Hospice. After completing 36 hours of volunteer training and a minimum of four hours of orientation to the Palliative Care Unit, volunteers are ready to participate in any of the following areas, working with Hospice clients:
As a volunteer on our Board you will provide governance and participate in strategic planning that will effectively move the organization forward. Whether you participate in only one fundraiser a year or provide ongoing support, there are many ways to become active in fundraising for Hospice. Fundraising is an integral part of sustainability for non-profit organizations like Nanaimo Hospice, who do not receive enough government funding. Nanaimo Hospice has two major fundraisers a year: Hike for Hospice in May and Celebrate a Life in December. Hospice Shoppe Volunteers - Nanaimo’s newest thrift store, has 80 volunteers who help raise funds to support our programs and services. Planned Giving is another area of fundraising that we wish to further develop. Hospice House is the hub of Hospice activities. It takes many people to keep our physical space and office running smoothly. House and office volunteers participate based on their own skills and the level of participation desired. Tasks could include light housekeeping, laundry, yard/garden cleanup, and office duties such as photocopying, folding mailout materials and stuffing envelopes, etc.
