Planned Giving

a gift of a lifetime

  • What is planned giving?

Planned giving means you create a charitable gift now that goes to the organization or charity you love in the future, usually when you die.

It’s “planned” because it takes some thought and preparation, and because you should consult a lawyer and your financial advisor about it. The easiest planned gift is part of something you should have anyway: your will.

Types of Planned Gifts

  • Make Nanaimo Community Hospice a beneficiary in your will and know that your legacy will live on for generations. Consult with your lawyer and financial professionals for advice about how best to do this for your situation. In addition, a tax receipt for the full amount of your donation will be issued and may offset capital gains or other taxes payable to lessen the financial cost on your estate.

  • Donating non-registered stocks, mutual funds or other types of marketable securities directly to a registered charity exempts you from paying tax on capital gains on those securities. You will also get a tax receipt for the full amount of the gift. This can be done while you are living.

For electronic transfer, please contact your broker or advisor and fill out a Securities Transfer Form.

  • Retirement funds are likely among the most heavily taxed assets you own. Naming Nanaimo Community Hospice as a beneficiary can be an effective way of creating a tax-smart estate plan.

    By doing so you:

    • receive a tax receipt for the full amount donated

    • avoid probate fees

    • reduce your estate taxes

  • You can create an endowment fund by donating cash or assets. Endowment funds may be pooled, and individual endowments may require a minimum contribution.

42 years and counting!

The demand for Hospice services has never been higher! As we grow to meet this demand Nanaimo Community Hospice is looking to secure our future and our services, with several key donation strategies.

Planned giving has been identified as an underutilized but highly impactful way of donating to registered charities. Planned gifts can help significantly minimize income tax at death and help support charities.

We would like to share information with our community about Hospice, our plans for the future and how your planned gift could help us continue to provide services for another 42 years!

Join us for a free presentation and a tour of Nanaimo Community Hospice, including the gardens and the children’s play therapy room. Light refreshments served.
