Musings on Mortality
What keeps you from talking about death more?
Join us on Thursday, September 24th, for Musings on Mortality, an evening of open and meaningful conversation about death, dying, and mortality in a relaxed, non-clinical setting among peers. This program is open to everyone in our community. You do not need to be a Nanaimo Community Hospice client to attend.
Musings on Mortality is styled in a Death Café format, though differs slightly in that we have monthly themes. This month our conversation prompts will guide towards Local Resources – Share What You Know, however we will go wherever the conversation takes us. The Death Café movement has an objective 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'.

Yoga & Mindfulness for Grief & Loss (Client Program, Child and Youth)
We are excited to offer a 6-week Yoga & Mindfulness for Grief & Loss program for children ages 9–12 who are navigating grief, change, or death.
Through yoga, mindful movement, and connection, this program provides a supportive space for children to explore and move through their grief.
Dates: October 6 – November 10, Tuesdays
Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Location: Nanaimo Community Hospice, 1080 St. George Crescent
The program will be facilitated by Katie Sayers, Yoga Instructor (RYT 200, Certified Kids & Youth Yoga Teacher).

Drumming & Grief: Join us for a healing circle (Client Program)
Grief can be difficult to put into words. Sometimes, expression can happen through rhythm, sound, and shared experience.
Join us for Drumming & Grief: A Healing Circle, a guided session offering a supportive space to explore grief through drumming and rhythm. Participants can use rhythm as a nonverbal way to express grief, connect with emotions, and experience a sense of shared presence with others navigating loss.
No musical or drumming experience is necessary, and drums will be provided.
Date: Thursday, October 15th

Our Advance Care Planning (ACP) workshop is a supportive, two-part session designed to help you prepare for your future healthcare choices. Following the BC Centre for Palliative Care (BCCPC) framework, the workshop guides you through three clear steps: Think, Talk, and Plan.
First, you will think about your personal values and the types of medical care you would want if you became very ill. Next, you will learn how to talk about these wishes with your loved ones and healthcare providers so everyone is on the same page.
Finally, the workshop focuses on the planning phase, where you put your choices into writing. You will learn how to choose a substitute decision-maker to speak for you and explore legal options like a Representation Agreement or an Advance Directive. By the end of the two parts, you will have the knowledge and peace of mind to ensure your future health wishes are known and respected.

NCHS Update: Join us for Companions Through Anticipatory Grief
Companions Through Anticipatory Grief offers a compassionate space for adults who are supporting or preparing for the approaching loss of someone they love.
Anticipatory grief is a natural response when a loved one’s death is expected.
Many people experience a wide range of emotions while navigating uncertainty, caregiving, and change, and connecting with others who understand can help ease feelings of isolation.
This weekly in-person peer support group provides a space to pause, reflect, and be in the company of others walking a similar path.
